Last weekend, five Academy students travelled to Widemouth Bay in Bude, North Cornwall to compete in the British National Schools Surfing Championships hosted by Surfing GB. Max Davies (10), Georgia Buckley (10), Esme French (10), Lily Mandeville (9) and Arnie Buckley (7) all made the trip down south for the two day event. Competition was tough with over 120 of Britain’s best and brightest future surf stars on show competing from 38 different schools from as far afield as Jersey. Our students showed great determination and resilience throughout the whole competition and did themselves proud. Despite feeling frustrated about her surfing, Lily managed to finish with a fourth place in the Under 14s category which was a great achievement. For Arnie this was his first taste of national competition and he faired extremely well against some exceptionally tough and experienced competitors. As a team, they earned The Ilfracombe Academy some well-deserved points placing the school first amongst the North Devon schools and fifth overall across the whole country.
Next, for some of these surfers, is a chance to meet with the Devon Watersports Team and compete in the Atlantic Games to be held in Orio, Northern Spain. The Academy is hoping that a large number of their students will be a part of the surfing, sailing and surf life-saving teams. With these teams due to be selected in the next few weeks, keep an eye on the school’s website for further information.
