Spectroscopy in a Suitcase

On Tuesday 1st December, first year A Level chemistry students took part in an enrichment programme entitled ‘Spectroscopy in a Suitcase’ delivered by Bristol University. Students were given an introductory lecture in analytical chemistry before running test using top of the range apparatus including an infrared spectroscope. Some of the sample analysed by students included the drugs cocaine and benzocaine.  In the New Year a team of 3 A level chemists will compete in the regional heats of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s ‘young analyst competition’ aiming to repeat their winning performance from 2013.
