Have you ever wondered; how to keep the slugs off your prized vegetable, or how to make the perfect bubble recipe? These questions and many more were answered by budding young Scientists at The Ilfracombe Academy competing in our inaugural ‘Science Fair’ on the 10th of July.
Throughout the academic year students were encouraged to carry out wild and wacky investigations and they did not disappoint on the day. Thirty eager finalists arrived with their prized experiments and presented their findings to their peers and judges from local scientific companies TDK Lambda and Pall. Both judges were hugely impressed with the quality and variety of projects on show and deliberated at length before deciding on the overall winners:
1st Place – Matthew Finch (yr 9) Design and construction of a wind-tunnel for streamlining investigations
2nd Place – Ellis Rees (yr 7) Investigation into house-hold snail and slug deterrents
3rd Place – Alison Stannett, Summer Stringer (yr 9) and Dylan Godber (yr 8)
The Science department at the Academy hopes to expand the event during 2015-16 and take advantage of the buzz around Science created by the event.
