Letter from the Headteacher - Welcome back the final half term

Dear Parents and Carers,

We hope that everyone had a fantastic May half term and especially a fun packed Platinum Jubilee celebration. The students have had a good return to school and once again the Year 11 and 13 students have impressed the teaching staff and exam invigilators by how motivated and composed they have been during the exams.

Please see some highlights of the last two weeks.

House Launch

This week we launched our brand-new house system with our 4 new houses. These are Capstone, Hele, Lee and Watersmeet. Both students and staff will compete in competitions to win house points to crown the winner of the house shield.

The house entertainment team also held a bake sale to raise money for prizes for the house lottery at the end of term. We raised over £90! Massive thank you to Rosie, Cadey, Aine, Jenny and Abbie in Year 8 for running the stall.

Lunchtime on Thursday saw 12 members of staff be given 5 minutes to dress up using Mr Vale’s costume cupboard. A hugely tight competition saw Hele take the victory with Mr Law just taking first place with Mr Hadfield and Mr McDonald in second. Jubilee Entertainers

Local revellers at Jubilee events were entertained by musicians from the academy in Lee and Woolacombe last weekend. On Friday, the sunny weather brought hundreds of visitors to Lee Spring Fair at the village hall. Joe Steer, our guitar and ukulele teacher, encouraged many of his pupils from our school, and many of our feeder schools, to provide the entertainment for the afternoon. Pupils from years 7-11 showed wonderful musicianship and fantastic courage- some were performing at a public event for the first time. On Saturday the wind blew and the rain tried to dampen the spirits but Project Groove, our band of performers from year 8-12, brought out the sunshine and got people dancing to an hour long set of funky dance classics at the Woolacombe Jubilee celebration in the meadow. If you haven’t heard them in full flow yet you are in for a treat with classics such as Play That Funky Music, Mustang Sally and Love Shack!

I’d like to take the opportunity to congratulate all those who took part in both events (lots of house points were earned)- they were a real credit to the music department and our school!

If you missed out then you will be interested to know that iFest 2022 is taking place on 13th July at 6pm here at the academy. It will be an opportunity to hear all of these musicians again and many more. Tickets on the door will cost £3 for pupils and £5 for adults- look out for more details on the school social pages over the coming weeks.

Athletics Night 2 - Braunton 8/6/22

We had another impressive evening of athletics for The Ilfracombe Academy with 47 eager students representing and demonstrating the core values of the academy including courage, hope and respect.

We are incredibly proud to announce that our Year 10 girls’ and Years 8 and 9 boys’ teams have all qualified for the finals night where we will go to compete for the top spots!

Our most impressive year group overall were the Year 9s. Elsie B scoring 1st in discus and 3rd in shot being the standout performer. She was supported by Alice L, Owen H and Kairon who all came 3rd in their respective events. Both boys and girls all came in 3rd place for the highly contested 4 x 100m Year 9 relay too!

Special mentions also to Beatrice T in Year 10 who despite never having thrown a discus before still secured second place!

Hats off to Freya C in Year 7 and from Year 8 Eddie WC, Jackson J, Mattie T who all came third in their events.

An amazing attitude, behaviour and effort demonstrated by all those involved. Well done!

We look forward to the finals for those 3 teams with the date to be confirmed soon.

You’re Hired!

Thursday 9th June saw the return of our successful 'You're Hired' event. This is one of our flagship careers events at the school and involves the whole of Year 10 getting into their best business attire and attending several workshops with visiting employers, colleges and careers organisations. Sessions this year involved a number of invaluable skills such as: interview technique; CV writing; logic and communication and social media profiling to name just a few. The day always concludes with a few of our students being interviewed live in front of the entire year group by a team of employers (this year two managing directors from Pall). Of the current Y10 cohort, Harriet Knill and Billie Phelps Parsons stepped up for this and did an incredible job with some very challenging questions certainly in keeping with the most rigorous of job interviews.

The year group did an amazing job and hopefully took away some important guidance and support regarding their next steps. A massive thanks to all the employers and institutions involved: Pall, Perigo, TDK-Lambda, Thomas Westcott, Atlas Packaging, Petroc, Careers Southwest and Next Steps Southwest. We really appreciate local employers taking time to work with our students and show the wealth of opportunities we have here in our community.

Mr Vale

On behalf of all the staff at The Ilfracombe Academy, I hope you a lovely weekend with your family and friends.

Yours Sincerely
