Letter from the Headteacher - Schools out for Yr11 & 13

Dear Parents and Carers,

It’s been an another incredibly busy week at the Ilfracombe Academy. The Year 11 and 13 students finished their exams this week and we’re so proud of how they have shown real determination and resilience to see things through.

The Year 11s now have their prom and the Year 13s have their end of year celebrations to look forward to, followed by a well-earned rest through the summer.

The Big Bang Fair

30 year 9 students made the long trip to Birmingham on Wednesday to The Big Bang Fair.

This was a huge exhibition taking up 2 halls at the NEC designed to inspire students through science, technology, engineering, and maths. We met young men and women engineers and technicians from a wide variety of industries including Aerospace, the nuclear institute, the Royal Air Force and Rolls Royce. There were plenty of hands-on activities for the students to try and plenty of demonstrations to watch. The students had an excellent experience and all came away with an armful of freebies and a brain full of inspiration.

In addition to this, our students were complimented by a member of the public who wrote to the school praising their conduct at a service station on the way home. Here is an extract from his email, ‘The children representing your school today were an absolute pleasure to witness. They were extremely well behaved, well-mannered and courteous. . . I would like to suggest that the students representing your school today have done so excellently and are a credit to your school and, therefore, deserve whatever credit you may see fit to award.’ It fills us with great pride to see our students practising our school values both in and outside school. Well done Year 9. Mr Cohen and Mrs Middlecote

Sports Day 2022

We are delighted to be able to return to Sports Day this year although it will look a little different to previous years. The day will be split over two afternoons and the programme will be different according to year groups. In Y7 and Y8, both competitors and spectators will be cheering on our athletes. For Y9 and Y10, athletes only will be going up to Killacleave to compete. We are hoping that both afternoons will be a tremendous success as we celebrate our students’ hard work and determination to succeed in sports. We have, however, made the decision that some students will not be taking part in the day as competitors. We expect all students to practise our school values and there is a very small minority of students who have not done this. Therefore, if a student has received a suspension this term, they will not be taking part in the day. There are also other students whose poor behaviour in and around school means that they will also remain in school and not attend the event. We feel that this will allow the Sports Days to be a positive, enjoyable and celebratory event for those students who have proved themselves as excellent representatives of the school. Regrettably, due to safeguarding concerns, we are unable to allow parents to either event.

North Devon Schools Surf Championships 2022

Last Friday saw the return of the prestigious annual surfing competition on Croyde beach, in which 6 local schools competed for the bragging rights of being North Devon surf champions. Our team showed tremendous team spirit; upheld our school values and surfed their socks off to gain a hard fought second place. In the final count up of points they were close on the heels of Braunton Academy who took the top spot. What a fantastic achievement, with three of our 4 surfers in the open event making the final in challenging conditions. A good day out was had by all. Mr James

Year 7 & 8 Disco

A massive thank you to Mr Law and all of the staff that supported the Year 7 & 8 Disco on Tuesday 21st June. The students really enjoyed the evening and the school raised £380 pound towards the house system! The year 7 and 8s were well behaved and thoroughly enjoyed it! Overall, the event was a success and a fantastic team effort made this happen. The staff would also like to thank Sophie, Jess and Tia from Year 10 who were awesome at helping out with the refreshments. The next disco will be in September!

Tennis Triumphs 🎾

On Thursday, the Year 9 tennis teams travelled to Exeter to play Exeter School. Despite the hot weather, all played extremely well and fought hard in some close matches. A special mention must go to Phoenix who played an opponent two year groups above him and won! He, and partner Ben, also had an extremely close doubles game which was great to watch. Tristan and Franek also had some hard-hitting games where some fantastic tennis was played. In the girls, Elsie showed her consistency by taking her match against their number 1 player all the way to a deciding game and Daisy and Millie also had to work hard, adapting to a new court surface extremely well!

All the students were a pleasure to take and showed our school values of respect, integrity and courage throughout the day. All should be proud of their performance. 🎾

Gallagher Premiership Rugby Final (Twickenham)

On Saturday, 14 of our students travelled up to Twickenham to watch the Gallagher Premiership final between Leicester Tigers and Saracens. Students had a fantastic view of the match and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. What a fantastic experience for the students to see elite level Rugby.  May we offer a big thank you to Mr Baker for driving the minibus!

House Update

Limbo

150 students took part in Limbo 2 weeks ago with students trying to complete the 5 challenges to win house points for their houses. The majority of the students that took part managed to earn 15 points for their house with only one student from Capstone managing to complete the 50 point challenge!

Star Wars Quiz - The galaxy has been divided into four houses.

A quiz, calling all that know anything about Star Wars was released. Over 140 members of the galaxy took part to gain valued points for their house.

Many can now be known as superior Star Wars fans (20/20 - well done!), Meanwhile, Supreme Maths Leader Mr Cooper rages in search of the correct spelling of Grogu which cost him the point away from the perfect 20....

House Rewards

I am pleased to announce that there will be a House rewards assembly where those students who have contributed towards their house the most through competitions and Class Charts points will be in with a chance to be drawn out to win some fantastic prizes. These include a Hoverboard and an Amazon Echo Dot. Remember every point you can earn for your house counts!
