The first day of the new school year saw Blues musician and singer, Jarekus Singleton, visit the Academy to perform and talk to students about his life and his journey to becoming a successful performing and recording music artist. Currently touring in the UK and Ireland, the Mississippi based artist came in with his band and Alligator Records label boss, Bruce Iglauer. They held our students spellbound by their performances and open and honest accounts of their determinations to succeed in the music industry.
It was an inspirational visit which highlighted to our students that to achieve their dreams they need to work hard, be determined and have self-belief, with that anything is possible.
The Academy’s Head of Music, Tim Baker, summed up the experience ‘Jarekus’s performance was fantastic. Not only was it an amazing opportunity to hear a cutting edge blues artist making music that is relevant to young and old ears but he also had a really strong message. I’m sure our new year 7’s will remember how passionate he and his band were about working hard and following their dreams. For the older pupils it was a fabulous opportunity to meet and talk to an artist who is working on building a career in the music industry that is not all about overnight success. He had a strong message for them that told them that hard work, dedication and commitment will be rewarded.’
