The Christmas season started in earnest yesterday at The Ilfracombe Academy’s annual ‘Christmas Evening’ as once again, parents, carers, staff and friends were treated to a musical feast. The music genres on display ranged from classical, to pop, acoustic and folk. The varied programme included both solo and ensemble items interspersed by the customary stirring congregational carols and the audience also enjoyed outstanding cello, violin, guitar and clarinet recitals.
The evening opened with a solo verse from ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ sung beautifully by Charlie Thornton-Clarke and this was followed by a very confident performance from our Year 7 Singers.
All vocal performances supported by the Academy musicians were mesmerising and moving and our solo musicians left the audience in thrall with their recitals: Poppy Cook on cello, Paige Howard-Hildage on guitar, Rachel Woolmer on violin and Emily Reynolds on clarinet. A highlight of the evening was a medley of Our House songs performed by the cast; the energy and enthusiasm was infectious and delighted the audience.
With over 70 students taking part, Years 7 to 13 were represented at the concert and it was exciting to see so many talented newcomers coming through. The evening culminated with a whole band and singers’ performance of ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ which included faultless solos by Year 7 students.
It was a wonderfully festive evening enjoyed by staff, students and parents. Thank you to all who attended and well done to our very talented performers.
